As a STEM school, J. D. Parker Elementary emphasizes a focus on Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics during instruction. In addition to subject-specific learning, STEM aims to foster inquiring minds, logical reasoning, and collaboration skills.
We utilize many resources in order to reinforce the importance of Math and Science:
Maker Spaces and STEM Kits
Our Media center and Aviation Lab also hold many STEM manipulatives for students to utilize when learning. Our STEM Kits include model boats, cars and planes as well as Math manipulatives that students are able to use at their leisure. Our Media Center's Maker Space manipulatives include Magna-tiles and model circuit boards which help students learn about energy flow and mechanics. The Media Center also incorporates a program called OSMO. OSMO is a unique educational gaming accessory that opens up your iPad to the possibilities of physical play. It is crafted with artificial intelligence in order to bridge the gap between real and digital realms. while promoting educational learning.
We are enriched with technology. Not only do we have laptop carts and iPads ready for student use, we utilize our technology daily. Students are able to learn the Hour of Code with is a computer program that uses Game Based Learning to teach students how to code their own character's actions.
Early Release Days
Many of our Early Release Days are geared toward STEM PBLs (Project Based Learning) events for teachers to learn more about how and when to incorporate STEM building strategies into their teaching.
