Superintendent, School Board Set Risk Mitigation Strategies That Will Take Effect June 1, 2021
During the Emergency Meeting of the School Board held May 12, 2021, Superintendent John D. Millay presented his summer transition risk mitigation plan. Dr. Millay's recommendation was approved by the School Board.
Highlights of the plan include:
In August 2021, the District will make a full return to traditional, in-person learning. All students attending a District-operated school will attend classes on campus each day. Florida Virtual School remains an option for families wanting a non-traditional alternative.
The Florida Department of Education (FDOE) has recommended masks be voluntary for the 2021-2022 school year. Barring an unusually high spike in positive COVID-19 cases or change in pandemic circumstances, the District plans to follow this recommendation. As the District begins planning for the 2021-2022 school year during the summer months, recommendations from the Florida Department of Health in Martin County (DOH Martin) and the District's Pandemic Crisis Response Team will be shared with the School Board. Effective June 1, 2021, masks will be optional for students and staff during the summer months. Masks will be voluntary for students participating in any District-operated program or activity, including summer school and Extended Day. Optional masks will be available for students and staff at each site and campus.
Vaccines are encouraged. The CDC and Florida Department of Health advise that obtaining a COVID-19 vaccine is the best, long-term way to combat the virus. Once fully vaccinated, students/staff will not be required to quarantine following contact with a positive case.
Families are encouraged to continue monitoring the District's website and social media accounts for the latest information.
