Band

IMS Music FAQ’s
What instruments can they play?
IMS offers instruction of the following Band instruments: flute, oboe, clarinet, bassoon, saxophone, trumpet, horn, trombone, baritone, and tuba. Students can also learn how to play percussion instruments.

When will my student have music class?
There are 3 band classes that meet every day. Each band is based on grade levels: beginning (6th grade), intermediate (7th grade), and Concert band (8thgrade). Students who wish to be a part of the drumline must take a beginning band course first. Students who are new to learning an instrument will start in beginning and work their way up the pipeline that progresses from beginning to Concert band.

How much does it cost?
Cost for band depends on a couple of factors. Many students use school-owned instruments for a maintenance fee of $55 for the year. In addition to instrument rental students may need to purchase a mouthpiece for their instrument. Mouthpiece costs depend on the type of instrument. All music is supplied in class. We do have a limited supply of school-owned instruments, so families are encouraged to rent an instrument if it is within their budget, which should be done after school starts.

Are there performances?
Each ensemble typically performances 2-3 times during the school year, but upper level ensembles perform several times throughout the year. Our regular performances are held at IMS on weekday evenings.

Are there trips?
Upper level ensembles travel to regional festival every year. Our trips are built on student learning through performance opportunities. Every student in a class is expected to participate.
