What is Advanced Placement (AP)?

Advanced Placement (AP) is a college-level program created by the College Board that allows high school students to engage in rigorous coursework and demonstrate mastery through a standardized exam. AP courses emphasize critical thinking, analytical writing, problem-solving, and content mastery. Students who earn qualifying scores on AP exams may receive college credit or advanced placement, depending on the policies of the college or university they attend.

AP Testing

Students enrolled in an AP course are expected to sit for the corresponding Advanced Placement exam. AP exams are administered each May on dates set by the College Board, not Martin County High School, and these dates are inflexible. Exam formats vary by subject but typically include a combination of multiple-choice questions and free-response or problem-solving sections that assess content knowledge, analytical thinking, and writing skills.

AP FAQs

Can Students Take AP Classes While Enrolled in AICE?

Yes. AP and AICE work well together, and students are encouraged to take courses from both programs when appropriate. Many students successfully combine AP and AICE classes to create a rigorous, well-rounded academic schedule that supports their college and career plans.

Does MCHS Offer the AP Diploma Program?

No. Martin County High School does not offer the AP Capstone Diploma program on campus. However, students who are interested in completing additional AP coursework may choose to take AP classes through Florida Virtual School (FLVS), with guidance from their school counselor.
