Our teachers and staff are committed to creating a school environment that not only supports academic learning but also promotes students’ personal and social development. At Willoughby Learning Center we use Positive Behavior Support (PBS) as a tool for teaching students’ appropriate behavior at school. Within this framework, teachers and staff use a system of rewards and consequences to manage student behavior. To encourage appropriate behavior and recognize students that demonstrate STARS qualities, students are rewarded using school-wide, classroom, and individual incentives. On the contrary, teachers and staff may implement a variety of consequences such as time-out, reflective assignments, or loss of privileges to discourage inappropriate behavior.
To help students remember our universal guidelines, we use the acronym STARS which stands for Safe, Take Responsibility, Achieve, Respectful and Self Control. This behavior is encouraged daily by teachers and staff in all school settings.
Willoughby Learning Center is a PBIS (Positive Behavior Intervention Support) school. We strive to reinforce the positive behaviors that our students model every day. Our school-wide expectations are to STARS:
SAFE
Take Responsibility
Achieve
Respectful
Self Control
The faculty and staff have demonstrated and continue to demonstrate these expectations to the students to help them make the right choices. When your child makes the right choice, they are often rewarded with Dojo Points. Dojo Points are used as a universal reward system. Students are awarded Dojo points when they are seen exhibiting STARS behavior. The points are a positive reward that your child can save or spend in a variety of ways. At least every other week, your child has the opportunity to cash in their points for prizes, for experiences, and treats. We also have many exciting rewards and giveaways for the students throughout the year.
The Dojo Store is the PBIS positive reinforcement being put into action. It is located in the Cafeteria here at Willoughby Learning Center . Here, students are able to spend Dojo points that they have earned for positive behavior. Thanks to our generous donors it is full of awesome prizes, such as posters, socks, jibitz, fidget spinners and so much more.
Please take this opportunity to talk to your child about the behavioral expectations at school and the importance of continuing to demonstrate STARS behaviors. With your continued support and involvement, Willoughby Learning Center will remain a school where students can excel.
