Black History Month FL

The Florida Department of Education and Volunteer Florida invited students to participate in the 2026 Black History Month student art and essay contests with the theme, โ€œCelebrating Black History.โ€ Black history Month is recognized and celebrated during the month of February.

โ€œBlack History Month is a time to celebrate the profound contributions of African Americans to Floridaโ€™s rich history and culture,โ€ said Commissioner of Education Anastasios Kamoutsas. โ€œI hope every student takes this opportunity to learn about the ways Florida has been shaped and strengthened by these contributions.โ€

โ€œBlack History Month contests provide an opportunity to celebrate excellence while honoring the lasting contributions of African Americans across our state,โ€ said Josie Tamayo, CEO of Volunteer Florida. โ€œWe are proud to recognize students and educators whose efforts bring history to life and inspire learning beyond the classroom.โ€

All Florida students are invited to participate in contests based on this yearโ€™s theme. Students in grades K-3 are invited to participate in an art contest, while students in grades 4-12 are invited to participate in an essay contest. Additionally, students, parents, teachers and principals are invited to nominate full-time educators of all student grades for the Black History Month Excellence in Education Award.
