In May 2023, Gov. Ron DeSantis signed Florida HB 891 into law, establishing a four-year school attendance model for year-round education beginning in the 2024-2025 school year. According to the legislation, the purpose of the program is for the Department of Education to assist school districts in establishing a year-round school program within at least one elementary school in the district and study the issues, benefits, and schedule options for instituting year-round school programs for all students.
The Florida Commissioner of Education will select only five districts to participate in the program.
To be considered for the program, a District must apply, identifying the schools potentially participating and an explanation of how the implementation of the year-round school program would benefit the students, among other information.
Implementing a year-round school does not change the number of instructional days. In year-round school, the mandated 180 days of instruction are spread throughout the year, changing the duration and timeframes of breaks.
The Martin County School District is looking for the community’s feedback for an upcoming School Board Workshop discussion regarding the possibility of implementing a year-round school pilot program.
The District has initially identified Warfield Elementary, Pinewood Elementary, Port Salerno Elementary and Indiantown Middle as potential schools to participate in the pilot program.
As we move forward to discuss the possibility of participating in this pilot program, the District wants to hear suggestions, insights and questions from families and staff.
