The Martin County School District recently hosted its first districtwide cursive writing contest, highlighting a skill students across the District are already developing in the classroom.
The inaugural competition invited students from across the District to showcase their ability to write clearly and accurately in cursive. The effort reflects the District’s proactive approach to strengthening handwriting instruction ahead of a new state statute that will require cursive writing instruction beginning in the 26-27 school year.
Twelve finalists were recognized during the School Board’s May regular meeting, where first-, second- and third-place winners were honored by the School Board and Superintendent Michael Maine.
Entries were judged by Executive Director of Curriculum and Instruction Dan Moore, along with State Representatives Toby Overdorf and Dana Trabulsy, who joined the District in recognizing student achievement and the importance of strong written communication skills.
While a new state law taking effect July 1 will require school districts to provide cursive instruction between grades 3 and 5, with students demonstrating proficiency by third grade, the District has already been implementing cursive instruction. District leaders say the contest provided an opportunity to celebrate student readiness while aligning with the state’s renewed emphasis on handwriting.
