Martin County High School is proud to announce that Isabella Calhoun has been named the 2025 Best-In-Fair Grand Winner in the Senior Section of the Biological Sciences Division at the Science and Engineering Fair of Florida.
Isabella’s award-winning project explored a critical question in medical science: How do female hormones affect Hypermobile Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome (hEDS)?
hEDS is a connective tissue disorder characterized by excessive joint mobility and often accompanied by other symptoms. The condition is caused by genetic mutations that impact the production or structure of collagen, a protein essential for strength and elasticity in connective tissues.
Through her research, Isabella aimed to deepen understanding of how hormonal factors may influence the severity or progression of hEDS, a topic with significant implications for patient care and treatment strategies.
Looking ahead, Isabella plans to pursue a career in medical science and hopes to attend Florida State University (FSU) or the University of Florida (UF) to study Clinical Pathology.
Congratulations to Isabella for her outstanding achievement and for representing MCHS with excellence at the state level!
