Martin County High School basketball Coach John Leon has been honored as the 2024-25 Florida Athletic Coaches Association Coach of the Year, recognizing a historic season and a distinguished career at the school.
Leon, who has led the Tigers since the 2010-11 season, has built a record of 313-71 (.815 winning percentage), the best in school history. Under his leadership, the team has won eight district championships, appeared in 12 regional playoffs, reached the Final Four twice, and captured the state championship in the 2021-22 season.
His coaching has helped at least 16 players move on to play at the collegiate level, and he was previously recognized as the 2022 Florida Dairy Farmers Coach of the Year.
In addition to his coaching duties, Leon has served as a dean at Martin County High School for the past 12 years. He joined the school in 2010 and has held multiple roles supporting students during his tenure. Prior to coming to Martin County High School, Leon was an assistant coach at Florida State College from 2004 to 2010.
“Coach Leon is setting the standard for excellence in Martin County,” said Superintendent Michael Maine. “He pushes his athletes to achieve their best on the court while guiding them to grow as students and leaders. We’re proud to celebrate his leadership and the lasting impact he has on the Tiger community, and the District as a whole.”
The Florida Athletic Coaches Association award recognizes Leon’s outstanding contributions to high school basketball and his dedication to developing student-athletes as leaders and competitors.
With this award, Coach Leon has also been nominated for consideration to be the NHSACA National Coach of the Year. Congratulations, Coach Leon!
