The Martin County School District is pleased to share that it has been awarded $500,000 in state funding to support the rebuilding of Murray Middle School, which sustained significant damage during Hurricane Milton on October 9, 2024. The District extends its sincere appreciation to Governor Ron DeSantis and the Florida Legislature - with particular thanks to Rep. Toby Overdorf and Sen. Gayle Harrell as our sponsors of this item - for their support and commitment to our recovery efforts.

Murray Middle School was among the hardest-hit areas in Martin County when Hurricane Milton made landfall, causing widespread devastation throughout the region. Several buildings on campus were rendered unusable, including spaces dedicated to the school’s music and performing arts programs.

To date, the Martin County School District has received $1.7 million from its insurance provider, with a total of $2.65 million expected. The newly awarded $500,000 in state aid will supplement these insurance proceeds and help offset the extensive costs associated with the restoration project.

As part of the rebuilding effort, the Martin County School Board has approved the complete reconstruction of Buildings 9, 10, and 18. These structures housed the school's band and chorus programs and were irreparably damaged during the storm. The new construction will ensure that students have access to modern, safe, and well-equipped learning environments that support both academic and artistic excellence.

The District will continue to provide updates on the progress of the rebuild in the coming weeks and months. We remain committed to supporting our students, staff, and families as we move forward together.
