Kindergarten Readiness Motor Skills

Embarking in kindergarten is a momentous step for both children and parents. To facilitate a smooth and successful transition, Principal Stacy Schmit of Bessey Creek Elementary School collaborated with one of the occupational therapists she works with to offer valuable tips for parents to prepare their prospective kindergarten students for the start of their educational journey.

The earlier children work on their fine and gross motor skills, the better they are at reading and writing because they are connected.

Principal Schmit gives the following tips on how to bolster your child's motor skills:

  • Move around!
  • Play with small items
  • Practice hand coordination
  • Work on grasp progression
  • Practice pre-writing skills
  • Limit technology
