Martin County Kindergartners Outperform all neighboring counties

The Martin County School District is proud to announce that recent results from the Florida Assessment of Student Thinking (FAST) for Kindergarten students last fall show that Pre-K students in Martin County outperformed students in Palm Beach County and across the Treasure Coast.

State law requires statewide kindergarten screening to be administered statewide within the first 30 days of school. FAST Star Early Literacy now serves as the kindergartner screener.

The FAST scores reflect that students who completed a VPK program within Martin County tested higher than those who completed programs in other Treasure Coast counties and in Palm Beach County.

Here is a breakdown of the FAST results for Kindergarten in Martin County:

  • 59% of all Kindergarten students scored ready for Kindergarten (state average 51%)
  • 70% of Kindergarten students who completed a VPK program scored ready for Kindergarten (state average 64%)
  • 35% of Kindergarten students who did not complete a VPK program scored ready for Kindergarten (state average 36%)

The Martin County School District’s VPK staff and Kindergarten ambassadors partner with the Early Learning Coalition of Indian River, Martin and Okeechobee to ensure students are learning the skills necessary for success in Kindergarten.

“Early learning education is important to building the foundation of a successful educational career,” Superintendent Michael Maine shared. “The exceptional achievements of our young learners are a testament to the dedication and excellence of our educators and the success of our early learning initiatives and partnerships.”

“The early childhood community of Martin County has been working together to increase the readiness of all VPK students in Martin County,” Jennifer Corkern, Director of Pre-Kindergarten Programs shared. “This collaborative effort shows in our scores and I look forward to our continued partnerships to help all students succeed in kindergarten and beyond.”
