During the 25-26 school year, The Pinewood Elementary School unveiled a new compassion bench, a symbol of kindness, empathy and support for students and staff.
The bench was dedicated during a special ceremony on March 25, featuring student speakers, district leaders and community partners. Built through a partnership with Project Lift and painted by Pinewood art students, the bench is part of a districtwide initiative led by Truman Dunn to bring compassion benches to every Martin County elementary school. The project encourages students to support one another through kindness, empathy and inclusion while helping foster a school culture where every student feels seen, supported and valued.
The project also reflects Pinewood’s commitment to fostering an environment where every student’s voice matters. By encouraging empathy, collaboration and connection among peers, the compassion bench reinforces the school’s mission of helping students grow as communicators, leaders and caring members of their community.
During the ceremony, students shared their thoughts on what compassion means to them, describing it as helping others, being a good friend and making sure no one feels left out. The bench reflects the values Pinewood promotes every day and reinforces the importance of ensuring students feel seen, heard and loved.
Pinewood is the second elementary school in the District to dedicate a compassion bench, with plans for additional benches on our elementary campuses.
