Dear Students & Parents:
The end of the 2025-2026 school year is upon us! We want to encourage students to continue to read over the summer. We are excited about welcoming our incoming sixth graders onto campus very soon. With summer quickly approaching, we would like to make you aware of our SMS optional summer reading project, which will be due Friday, August
21st.
Research shows that students who do not read over the summer months can lose a significant amount of what they learned during the school year. Research specifically indicates that middle school students need to read at least 4-5 books over the summer to prevent reading decline. Fortunately, summer reading programs are designed to help prevent this from happening. At SMS, it is our mission to make sure each and every
student reaches their full potential!
Students may read a novel of their choice and complete a project from the choice board. Also, we encourage students to participate in the Martin County Public Library Summer Reading Program. This is not a requirement for your child, but it is an excellent program to motivate them to read over the summer.
We can’t wait to celebrate our summer readers when we come back in August. The optional project will be due the second full week of school to the student’s ELA teacher. The due date is Friday, August 21, 2026. Students will earn the incentives of a positive referral, a book vending machine token, and a 100% test grade in ELA for fully participating in the optional Summer Reading Project.
Parents, thank you in advance for your support in encouraging our students to be lifelong learners!
Best regards,
SMS ELA Department
