Summer reading

Attention all students, it is time to plan your summer reading! This year, we are featuring SUMMER READING BINGO with a chance to WIN a $50 Amazon gift card.  In addition, all participants in this optional project will be invited to our Summer Readers Celebration when we return to school in August.  SSYRA books are encouraged, however, students can choose to read ANY book they are interested in reading.

Dear Students & Parents:

Summer is almost here and that means relaxing days at the beach, time for hanging out with friends and plenty of rest and relaxation.  Along with all that fun, hopefully, summer means extra time to read for pleasure.  Books are such a wonderful way to pass the time.  Full of adventure, exploration and new ideas, books can bring a special enjoyment to the days of summer.

In addition, reading books during the summer can actually help build reading stamina, vocabulary and comprehension.  It is a great way to keep skills sharp for the new school year. Research shows that students who do not read over the summer months can lose a significant amount of what they learned during the school year.   Research specifically indicates that middle school students need to read at least 4-5 books over the summer to prevent reading decline

Fortunately, summer reading programs are designed to help prevent this from happening. Our summer reading program is full of choices so students can read what they are interested in reading.  If your student already has a favorite author or series, they are invited to continue reading those books as part of our incentive.

If your student needs some ideas of excellent books to read, look no further than the Sunshine State Young Readers (2021-2022) booklist to encourage book choices that are appropriate for both interest and reading level.  Students can find titles of great books to read from our public libraries here in Martin county.  Our school library also offers a selection of e-books that are available throughout the summer.

This incentive is all about reading and minimizes the amount of time completing a project.  Please read the choices at the top of the BINGO board and choose the option that suits you! We can’t wait to celebrate our summer readers when we come back in August.  We will have our Summer Readers Celebration, for those students who complete this optional assignment. The project will be due the first week back to school to the student’s ELA teacher. Parents, thank you in advance for your support in encouraging our students to be lifelong learners!

Happy Reading,
