Martin County School District students were recognized for their empathy and compassion during the 20th Annual Sydney Young Golden Heart Awards, honoring those who consistently show kindness, advocacy, and support for others, specifically their siblings.
The program, established in 2006 by former Willoughby Learning Center principal Susan Burrows, was inspired by student Sydney Young and the care she showed toward her brother with disabilities. Today, educators and school staff continue that legacy by nominating students whose actions reflect those same values.
Honorees received a certificate and Golden Heart pin during an awards ceremony held May 6, 2026, at Willoughby Learning Center, surrounded by families, community supporters, and district leaders, including Superintendent Michael Maine and School Board members Amy B. Pritchett, Christia Li Roberts, and Jennifer Russell.
