The Martin County School District is expanding career opportunities for students through a new partnership designed to connect classroom learning with real-world healthcare experiences.
Through a collaboration between the District’s College & Career Readiness Department and the R.E.A.C.H. Center of Martin County, students recently completed the inaugural Bridge to Healthcare Careers program, an intensive training experience designed to prepare students for future opportunities in one of the community’s most critical industries.
Developed by Lana Barros, Coordinator of College & Career Readiness, the program provided students with hands-on experiences, industry connections, and professional skills needed to explore careers in healthcare.
“This program represents innovation in education,” said Lana Barros. “When we connect students with authentic experiences, industry experts, and clear pathways to employment, we create opportunities that can change the trajectory of lives. We aren't just preparing students for jobs; we're helping them discover purpose, develop confidence, and build futures.”
“Our responsibility is to find innovative ways to prepare every student for success while responding to the needs of our community,” said Superintendent Michael Maine. “When we create opportunities that help students discover their strengths, build meaningful skills, and pursue careers right here at home, we are creating a positive impact for both our students and the future of Martin County. That is a win for everyone.”
During the month-long program, students completed more than 100 hours of healthcare-focused training, career exploration, and professional development. Students participated in healthcare immersion experiences, résumé development, interview preparation, mock interviews with community leaders, and National Healthcareer Association (NHA) training focused on topics including medical terminology, patient communication, healthcare systems, and workplace responsibilities.
Beyond technical knowledge, students strengthened essential career skills such as communication, professionalism, adaptability, and time management. The experience helped students gain confidence while providing a clearer understanding of the many opportunities available in healthcare.
The program concluded with the recognition of the inaugural class of R.E.A.C.H.E.R.S.—students who completed the Bridge to Healthcare Careers program and are prepared to continue building their futures in healthcare.
The initiative reflects the Martin County School District’s commitment to providing students with meaningful college and career readiness opportunities while strengthening partnerships with local industries. By connecting students with employers and community leaders, the District continues to create pathways that help students graduate ready for their next steps.
The success of the inaugural cohort was made possible through the support of community partners, including the Education Foundation of Martin County, Economic Council of Martin County, Martin County Board of County Commissioners, Stuart/Martin County Chamber of Commerce, CareerSource Research Coast, Treasure Coast Urgent Care, Evergreen Private Care, and The Cabana at Jensen Dunes.
