Hidden Oaks Middle School students turned lessons of courage and compassion into action through The Red Bandanna Project, a service-learning initiative honoring local first responders and the legacy of Welles Remy Crowther, known as “The Man in the Red Bandana."
Led by the school’s English Language Arts Department, the project introduced students to Crowther’s story and his heroic actions during the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. The project held special significance this year as the nation marked the 25th anniversary of Sept. 11.
Students put those lessons into action by writing “Dear Hero” letters and assembling 100 Hero Bags filled with red bandanas, treats, gift cards, and other tokens of appreciation for local first responders.
The work started well before the bags were packed. Students held lemonade stands and completed other acts of service to help raise money for the project, with families and community members also contributing donations.
On Sept. 11, students personally handed the Hero Bags to first responders who visited the school, thanking them for their service and all they do to keep the community safe.
