Go Green Newfield Farm

CGE’s Club Go Green, led by Mrs. Tricia Martin, visited Newfield Farm today to thank them for generous donations and learn about sustainability. School Board member Mrs. Jennifer Russell and Commissioner Ed Ciampi joined the trip to commemorate the wonderful partnership CGE and this new local development have formed.  Student gardeners were invited to plant trees on the property and learned about Newfield’s commitment to the environment and local schools.

Club Go Green began 13 years ago with 7 students and has since grown to 38 participants. According to Mrs. Martin the club founder, the group began as a way students, “could learn about sustainability and how making small changes, can help protect our animals, plants, and natural world.” Teachers Jenny Gomez and Brandy Hartman have been an intricate part of the club throughout the years, allowing it to enlarge.

Go Green maintains a school garden and a recycling system on campus. Club members rightfully take pride in their garden. Thanks to a generous contribution from Newfield Farms, it is much bigger this year. Their donation included 50 fabric pots, several bags of dirt and a variety of herbs and vegetables, many of which are now incorporated into the lunch menu at school!

Through many years of hard work and fundraising, Go Green is directly responsible for the creation of our outdoor classroom. They also purchased filtered water bottle refill stations accessible to our students and staff throughout the school.

Next up for club members: Epcot’s Flower and Garden Show! Students will see how advancements in future agricultural methods can make a lasting impact now and for our future.

We are beaming with pride to have such a wonderful club at CGE and thankful for the devotion Mrs. Martin has given it #WeareCitrus #clubgogreen
