Skills to grow to be kindergarten ready

Starting kindergarten is a significant milestone for both children and parents. To help make this transition smooth and successful, Bessey Creek Elementary School Principal Stacy Schmit, with the help of kindergarten teachers, gathered valuable tips on how to prepare rising kindergarten students for the start of their educational journey.

Kindergarten readiness refers to the developmental domains that contribute to children’s ability to adapt to the kindergarten classroom.

When talking with teachers about kindergarten readiness, the skills they believe to be most helpful are:

  • Independence

  • Self-help

  • Following directions

  • Waiting

  • Taking turns

These skills can be difficult for students, especially if they have not had much practice with them prior to beginning school.  Providing direct opportunities for your children to practice is important.
