At Martin County High School, students in the Medical Academy’s Exercise Science program are gaining hands-on experience that prepares them for real careers.
From applying wound care and taping techniques to observing injury assessments during athletic events, students explore all aspects of sports medicine in real time. They build confidence by using their skills in both the classroom and on the field, helping them understand the foundational concepts of health care professions.
Led by Health Science teacher Allison Howard, the program introduces students to a wide range of opportunities, from athletic training and emergency services to physical and occupational therapy. It also encourages critical thinking and calm decision-making under pressure, especially in real-world situations.
Support from the Education Foundation of Martin County has played a meaningful role in expanding the program’s impact. With grant funding that the EFMC secured from community partners like HCA, students have access to enhanced lab experiences and additional professional-grade training tools, including phlebotomy arms and simulation materials. These resources allow students to practice procedures they may use in future medical careers.
The Exercise Science program is helping students discover their passions early while developing valuable skills that set them apart and set them up for success. This is just one of the many Career and Technical Education programs offered in the Martin County School District. We are proud to share that Allison Howard was named TCPalm’s Teacher of the Week for June 22–27 for her impactful work with students.
