MCSD students excel at SSEF

Sixteen middle and high school students in the Martin County School District recently competed and excelled at the State Science and Engineering of Florida (SSEF), which took place in Orlando, Florida on April 2-4.

 

Students from Stuart Middle School, Murray Middle School, Hidden Oaks Middle School, Martin County High School and South Fork High School represented the District, demonstrating outstanding talent, dedication and ingenuity in the science and engineering fields.

 

The District is proud to share that six teams finished in the top five in their categories. Additionally, Martin County High School Senior Nira Goyal is advancing to the International Science and Engineering Fair.

  • 4th Place in Category -- Nina Goyal, Martin County High School: Control of Fall Armyworm, a Global Pest, Using RNA interference and Antisense Oligonucleotides [Spodoptera frugiperda: Noctuidae: Lepidoptera]

  • 3rd Place in Category -- Ethan Timmer and Matthew Jarrell, Stuart Middle School: Aerodynamics of Airfoils in a Wind Tunnel

  • 3rd Place in Category -- Varun Signh, South Fork High School: A Novel Approach to Waste Recycling with Robotic Force Sensing and Image Processing using Deep Convolutional Neural Network

  • 2nd Place in Category -- Nira Goyal, Martin County High School: A Review of the Use and Promotability of Mental Health Apps by Teenagers

 

Murray Middle School student Claire Rawlings earned a $50 cash award from the Florida Association of Science Supervisors and Heartland Regional Science and Engineering Fair for her project titled, “Electric v. Bass.”

 

Congratulations to all students who participated in the SSEF and their teachers who played a pivotal role in their success. All students and teachers will be recognized for their accomplishments during the School Board meeting on May 14.
