Elevate Eagles with Evening Reading
A 2019 study found that “the difference between being raised in a bookless home compared to being raised in a home with a 500-book library has as great an effect on the level of education a child will attain as having parents who are barely literate (3 years of education) compared to having parents who have a university education (15 or 16 years of education).” (Complete article here)

This week, we proudly hosted student assemblies to honor our nation’s heroes and teach about the importance of Veteran’s Day. We welcomed local veterans from VFW Post 10132, who shared about their branches of service and taught us the powerful meaning behind the 13 folds of the American flag.
💙Our very own Mrs. Brandt served as keynote speaker, sharing her personal experience in serving In the Army before becoming a teacher. She inspired us all with the reminder that strength is a mindset, and we can accomplish more than we give ourselves credit for.
❤️We also celebrated our very own 3rd grader who is Martin County’s Miss Poppy, Isabella. She spoke beautifully and explained the significance of the poppy flower as a symbol of remembrance and gratitude.
🤍 Special guest and Navy Veteran, Mr. Schilling played the bag pipes and filled our hearts with love and patriotism for our country.
Thank you to all who served and continue to serve. We are grateful for your courage, sacrifice, and example. ❤️🤍💙

On this Veterans Day, we honor the courage, sacrifice, and unwavering dedication of the men and women who have served our great nation. Your bravery protects our freedoms and inspires generations. Today, we stand grateful—now and always. ❤️🤍💙 ❤️🤍💙🇺🇸

Elevate Eagles with Evening Reading Tip #5
Create a Family Reading Routine
Set aside just 15 minutes each evening for a family reading time. Everyone chooses something to
read, such as a favorite book, magazine, comic, or even a recipe.
After reading, take a few minutes to share a favorite part, an interesting fact, or something you
wondered about.
Building a simple reading routine at home shows children that reading is valued, fun, and a lifelong
skill. Together, we can grow readers, one family story at a time.

Engage and talk to your child about the importance of reading. Ask what books they have checked out of the library or are reading at home or in class. Choose a book to read togheter. Ask them what their favorite book is right now; share with them a book you loved when you were there age. Go to the library togehter to get a library card...and books!
Engagement can happen during our daily routines...during breakfast have them read the back of the cereal box. Ask your child to read billboards or road signs as you travel in the car. If you are able to go out to a restaurant, have them read part of the menu for you, or better yet, ask them questions about the menu.
Any sort of conversation about reading is helpful and an added bonus is the stronger bond that will develop between you two.
Til next time...pick up a book and read! :)

This month, the Treasure Coast Student Educator Recognition Council celebrates Mr. Voss! He was nominated to receive a Certificate of Appreciation for “giving everyone a fresh start every day and bringing the best vibes to school. He has the biggest smile and can play so many instruments!”
What a wonderful way to describe our dedicated and talented teacher.
🤩 Well deserved, Mr. Voss! 💙🦅

Keep up the great work kids!
We sure enjoyed celebrating Character Counts here at HSE. Here are a couple more photos of "Team up against Drugs" with Ms Lucky's kids and "Sock it to Drugs" in Ms Thompson's class. Can you identify your child's foot?!

✨Productive and Energetic Early Release Day for HSE Team! The entire day was filled with joy.

Here is the rest of the article that discusses the importance of being a reading role model. This section discusses how you do this, it is quite simple!
Simple Ways to Be a Reading Role Model
Becoming a role model doesn’t mean you have to be a literary expert. It’s about making small, intentional choices that show your child the value of reading:
Let Them See You Read:
Whether it’s a novel, a magazine, or even a recipe, let your child catch you with a book in hand.
Talk about what you’re reading and why you enjoy it. For example, “I love this story because it’s teaching me something new.”
Read Together:
Share books as a family, taking turns reading aloud or exploring the pictures and words together.
Try making it a part of your daily routine, like before bed or after dinner.
Talk About Books:
Ask questions like, “What was your favorite part?” or “Why do you think the character did that?”
Share your own thoughts and connections to the story, showing your child how books can spark conversations.
Keep Books Accessible:
Place books in spots where your child can easily grab them, like the coffee table, their bedroom, or even the car.
Rotate books regularly to keep the selection fresh and exciting.
Celebrate Reading:
Praise your child’s efforts to read, no matter how small.
Mark milestones, like finishing a book, with simple rewards or family celebrations.
The Ripple Effect of Your Example
When you make reading a visible and valued part of your life, you’re not just influencing your child’s habits—you’re creating a ripple effect that can inspire the whole family. Grandparents, siblings, and even friends may take notice and join in the joy of reading.
Imagine your child growing up in a home where books are a regular part of life. They’ll carry those memories and habits with them, becoming lifelong learners and readers themselves. And it all starts with you.
Start Small, Start Today
You don’t need to be perfect to be a great role model. It’s not about how much you read or how fast you can finish a book. It’s about showing your child that reading is valuable, meaningful, and worth making time for.
So tonight, grab a book—any book. Curl up together and let the magic of reading unfold. Because when it comes to inspiring your child, every page you turn sends a powerful message: reading matters.

Currently, Kindergarten and 3rd grade are at 94% on the daily attendance report. Fifth grade has unfortunatly dropped down to 89%. Parents, as a reminder, learning is happening each and every minute here at HSE. We want and need your child in class everyday. As a parent myself, I know it isn't always easy, but it is so important! (and of course, keep the kiddos home if they are sick!) Thank you for all you do in your most important job of being a parent.

Welcome to another edition of "Elevate Eagles with Evening Reading" I pulled the below from a great website worldreader.org. The below was posted online January 17, 2025.
Why Being a Reading Role Model Matters
Children are natural imitators. When they see you engaging with books, they’re more likely to want to do the same. Here’s how your actions make an impact:
Creates Positive Associations: When your child sees you reading for enjoyment, they’ll associate books with fun and relaxation.
Sets Expectations: Your behavior communicates that reading is a normal and important activity—something worth prioritizing.
Builds Confidence: By modeling reading, you show your child that it’s okay to explore new stories, make mistakes, and learn at their own pace.
The next post will give you simple ways to be a reading role model. Stay tuned! That and much more to come!
If you are one of the very many adults who struggle with reading or learning English, the public library is a great place to get help. https://www.martin.fl.us/adult-literacy-services
