ELA Team: Strengthening Literacy Through the Science of Reading
On Wednesday, the ELA team immersed themselves in collaborative learning centered on the Science of Reading. Using Uncomplicate Ed’s Reading Road Maps, teachers engaged in a Gallery Walk of the Florida B.E.S.T. Standards, examining vertical alignment and identifying the Critical Content that drives strong literacy instruction from grade to grade.
Throughout the session, instructional staff experienced a variety of high‑impact student engagement protocols—practical, adaptable strategies that can be implemented immediately in classrooms. These routines were intentionally designed to support all learners, including Students With Disabilities (SWDs) and English Language Learners (ELLs), ensuring equitable access to grade‑level reading tasks.
Teachers also practiced structures that help students organize their thinking, build confidence, and prepare to interact meaningfully with complex texts. The energy in the room reflected a shared commitment to elevating literacy instruction for every student.
Science Team: Connecting Reading Science to Content‑Rich Instruction
On Thursday, the Science team participated in a parallel professional learning experience. Using the UE Reading Road Maps, teachers explored how reading standards connect to science texts, scientific vocabulary, and the background knowledge students need to thrive in content‑area learning.
During the session, teachers engaged in hands‑on strategies such as Senso‑Sketching, a technique that blends sensory input with visual representation to deepen comprehension of scientific concepts. Photos from the training capture teachers actively participating in protocols that help students organize meaning, make connections across content, and make their thinking visible.
These strategies not only support literacy within science but also strengthen students’ ability to analyze, communicate, and engage with rigorous academic material.
