📚HONORING OUR HISTORY📚
ICYMI: On May 17, 2025, the community gathered in Port Salerno to unveil a Florida Historic Marker at the Salerno Colored Schoolhouse—the last known one-room schoolhouse of its kind on the Treasure Coast.
Thanks to the dedication of the Martin County Black Heritage Initiatives and the Martin County Board of County Commissioners, this restored landmark stands as a powerful symbol of perseverance, education, and community.
School Board Chair Amy Pritchett (District 4) and Members Christia Li Roberts (District 1) and Marsha Powers (District 2) were honored to participate in the celebration.
The Martin County School District looks forward to our continued collaboration with these partners to develop future learning opportunities for students that bring this important piece of local history to life!

🌀🚧REBUILDING STRONGER🚧🌀
We’re proud to share that the Martin County School District has been awarded $500,000 in state funding to support the restoration of Murray Middle School, which was severely damaged during Hurricane Milton.
The school’s band and chorus rooms were among the hardest hit. This funding will support the rebuild of modern, safe, and well-equipped spaces where our students can grow academically and artistically—on a campus they’re proud of.
Our sincerest thanks go to Governor Ron DeSantis, the Florida Legislature, Rep. Toby Overdorf, and Sen. Gayle Harrell for making this possible.

What started as a typical summer day turned into a cute and inspiring animal rescue at Martin County High School—and yes, we’ve got photos!
Last week, camp counselor Ana Gonzalez noticed a mama duck in distress after her babies had fallen into a storm drain.
Enter our real-life heroes: Ray Williams (MCHS 2024-25 School-Related Employee of the Year!) and plant manager Brett Hawkins, who climbed down into the drain to rescue the ducklings and reunite them with their very relieved mom.
Ms. Dervin’s photography campers caught the whole rescue on camera! Shout-out to Kylie Resch and Ana Allen for capturing the winning shots. Kylie is pictured here with one of the rescued ducklings. 🦆
Just another day of going #ALLINMartin👊, even for our campus wildlife!

🌊🐢 PARTNERS IN EDUCATION 🐢🌊
During last week's board meeting, Superintendent Michael Maine, the Martin County School Board, and the Environmental Studies Center were presented with a generous donation from the Environmental Studies Council.
This generous donation will help offset the cost of an educator at the Environmental Studies Center—supporting the Center’s mission to inspire curiosity, conservation, and a love for our local environment in thousands of Martin County students each year.
We’re incredibly grateful to the Council for their continued commitment to hands-on science education and the unique programs that make the ESC a treasured part of our community. 🌊🌴

🍎LEAVING A LEGACY🍎
Please join us in celebrating Mr. Charlie Carr, who is retiring after 36 unforgettable years, 18 of which at the Environmental Studies Center!
A Martin County original, Mr. Carr has been the heart of the ESC—bringing science to life with his signature energy, humor, and one-of-a-kind teaching style. Whether guiding students through mangroves or making sea cucumbers squirt across the wet lab, he turned every moment into a hands-on lesson in curiosity, compassion, and care for the local environment. Superintendent Michael Maine and the School Board honored his incredible impact during the last board meeting.
Thank you, Mr. Carr, for making science fun and unforgettable our students!
