🍎MARTIN MINUTE WITH MILLAY🍎 The Martin County School District has had a collaborative, productive and fast-moving few weeks with regard to bargaining negotiations! AFSCME Local #597's 2021-2022 agreement was ratified by the School Board on August 16. The Martin County Education Association's 2021-2022 agreement, which was approved by bargaining unit-eligible employees on Tuesday, is scheduled to be ratified by the School Board in September. Yesterday, the District and AFSCME tentatively agreed to a contract for the current school year in RECORD time! 🍎GROWING AS LEADERS🍎 Over the summer, several MCSD assistant principals enhanced their leadership skills during the Aspiring Principals Academy. The two-week intensive professional development session was fully funded through a grant from the Mary and Robert Pew Public Education Fund. The purpose of this training is to create a leadership pipeline by helping assistant principals understand what traits principals need to be successfully serve MCSD schools. 🍎FOCUS ON SCHOOL IMPROVEMENT🍎 Earlier this week, Superintendent John D. Millay joined other District leaders in professional development designed to elevate the literacy-related teaching and learning of struggling schools. Ms. Jennifer Bacchiochi, Director of State Regional Literacy, facilitated the RAISE training. "This is meaningful, focused work with our schools in need of the most improvement," Dr. Millay said. "We are grateful to @educationfl for providing differentiated, research-based support that will help us continue to ensure positive outcomes for all students." #ALLINMartin👊 #PublicSchoolProud

🎶MAKING RIPPLES🎶 A teacher affects eternity; one can never tell where their influence stops. This sentiment rang true recently for Audrey, a fourth-grader at Warfield Elementary School, who won an essay contest sponsored by the Treasure Coast Music Teachers Association. As part of her submission, Audrey wrote about Mr. Elliott Harris, Warfield's longtime music teacher who now teaches at SeaWind Elementary School. Audrey has been named the recipient of a scholarship for voice lessons this school year. ✅ ON THE BALLOT✅ Election Day is here, Martin County! The Martin County School District’s 2018 millage rate referendum has provided additional revenue of $47 million over four years to fund critical operational programs and services throughout the District. One hundred percent (100%) of funds generated by the existing millage referendum have stayed in Martin County. Today, voters will be asked whether or not they wish to continue the 'up to' one-half mill property tax referendum for an additional four years. A millage referendum is the only way Florida school districts can secure additional funding for operational needs (salaries, academic initiatives, safety personnel) that cannot be covered using the funds allocated by the state. ✅ ON THE BALLOT✅ The TCPalm Editorial Board and Jensen Beach Chamber of Commerce's Board of Directors have endorsed the renewal of the millage referendum. In support of its recommendation, the TCPalm Editorial Board published the following: In a perfect world, there would be a better way for Florida school districts to adequately fund their operations without seeking voter approval every four years. Unfortunately, though, the state's formula for funding schools sets limits on how much districts can spend on their own without these types of referendums. If approved by the voters, the bulk of the money raised through the millage levy would supplement compensation for teachers and school support staff members. Smaller amounts would fund school resource officers and mental health counseling programs. Recruiting and retaining teachers is an issue in Martin County and elsewhere. School districts are using whatever methods they can, including millage referendums, to keep their classrooms staffed by qualified workers. A "yes" vote is recommended to provide a short-term solution to address these issues. #ALLINMartin👊 #PublicSchoolProud
