Congratulations to the following standout scientists: ⚛️ Nina Goyal, 7th grade - Hidden Oaks Middle School: "Effects of Double-Stranded RNA Treatment on Sunflowers." 🥈 2nd place in the Cellular and Molecular Biology category. Broadcom M.A.S.T.E.R.S. nomination. ⚛️ Nira Goyal, 10th grade - Martin County High School: "Plastic Mulch and Organic Amendments - Can They Help Us Control Nutsedge?" 4th place in the Plant Sciences category. Florida Association for Food Protection award - $350. Nira will advance to ISEF. ⚛️ Kathryn Rogers, 8th grade - Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School: "Feeling the Beat." 🥉 Third place in the Behavioral & Social Science category. ⚛️ Varun Singh, 8th grade - Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School: "Are You in my Hotspot?" 🥈 Second place in the Robotics and Intelligent Machines category. Broadcom M.A.S.T.E.R.S. nomination. ⚛️ Viraj Singh, 12th grade - South Fork High School: "A Mathematical Approach to Cryptography Using Laplace Transform and Taylor Series and its Vulnerabilities." Special project recognition in the Mathematics and Computational Sciences category. Florida Institute of Technology scholarship (half tuition per academic year - a value of $80K+ over four years). 🍎INSTRUCTIONAL UPDATE FOR FAMILIES🍎 In March, Governor Ron DeSantis signed Senate Bill 1048 into law, effectively eliminating Florida Standards Assessments (FSAs) and replacing them with progress monitoring. This school year will be the last year that students take FSAs - next year, Florida will fully implement progress monitoring-based school accountability. Our Division of Instructional Services has created a video explaining what parents need to know about this new legislation and the status of assessments: https://youtu.be/hjIM1Xcns6c. Many of our students will participate in FSAs this week. We ask families to continue prioritizing attendance and punctuality while also encouraging their children to take pride in demonstrating what they have learned this year. 🔬🏆CELEBRATING A SCIENCE CHAMPION🔬🏆 Varun Singh, an eighth-grader at Dr. David L. Anderson Middle School, earned the USAID - US Agency for International Development's Science Champion Award for his science fair project titled "Are You in My Hotspot?" For his project, Varun created a prototype that can record a person's body temperature without bodily contact while also detecting people that may have come into contact with them. The prototype works by scanning RFID-enabled lanyards and is designed for school or office settings. "This project can be implemented in schools, where students can be scanned either on the bus or at the school entrance, and can be advised whether they may enter the school," Varun wrote as part of the abstract for his project. "In addition, hospitals can use this project and find nurses and doctors that came into contact with certain patients, further enhancing safety. Any business or workplace that wants to track the whereabouts of their employees to keep them safe can use this prototype."
